Getting personal with Cassidy Browning

Welcome readers and Happy Hump Day! Today, I have Cassidy Browning stopping by and allowing me to pick her brain. I'm always curious about other authors, hence all the interviews :)

Good morning, Cassidy. I'm very intrigued to learn more about you and your lifestyle. Grab your morning poison, I'm dying to get started. (I love getting to the point).

Hennessee: So tell me, what inspires your stories?

Cassidy: We are passionate about increasing public awareness and acceptance of alternative lifestyles like BDSM and polyamory (ménage). So we try to make our stories as realistic as possible, including a little education about different BDSM techniques, what the clubs are really like, and what the emotional motivation is for doing these strange things.

Hennessee: Very interesting. Are any of the scenes in your books based on personal experiences?

Cassidy: We like to say that all of the emotions in our books are based on personal experiences, since we live the Master/slave or Dominant/submissive lifestyle that we write about.

Hennessee: Wow, this is good stuff. When did you began writing?

Cassidy: We’ve always written. It’s only been lately we’ve been willing to show anyone! We began our writing career in late 2009. We were looking for ways to use our D/s dynamic for personal and professional growth. Reggie knew that I (Cassidy) had always wanted to be a writer, so he started setting writing goals for me. It took a year and a half to finish our first book, and we found that we enjoyed writing together so much that we kept at it.

Hennessee: What kind of hero do you most enjoy writing about?

Cassidy: We both enjoying writing smartass dominant males. In “Double Dom” we found that the two guys came across very strongly to us both, making it really fun and easy to write the lighthearted banter between them. We think this is our most amusing book so far. The characters really wrote themselves.

Hennessee: You live the lifestyle and you write the lifestyle, but what do you enjoying reading when you have time?

Cassidy: We started out with extremely different reading preferences. I (Cassidy) just got my bachelor’s in English Literature in 2011, and I always loved the Victorians, so that was primarily what I read. Reggie had always been a big Sci Fi fan. When we got into the romance genre, we started reading that to see what worked and what readers liked, so now we both read quite a bit of romance as well.

Hennessee: What do you think makes a great bedroom scene?

Cassidy: Lots of emotion. The mechanics of a sex scene don’t really differ all that much, do they? The nice thing about BDSM and D/s is that the emotions can be quite different than a “normal” sex scene. If you can get into a character’s head while they’re playing or making love, it adds so much more for the reader to sink their teeth into.

Hennessee: Do you have an upcoming book you'd like to tell me about?

Cassidy: Our third Siren book (fifth book overall) releases today (yay!). It’s called “Double Dom Fantasies” and it’s available at http://www.bookstrand.com/cassidy-browning. It’s got some wonderful characters in it and (we think) quite a bit of humor.

 Blurb:
Reeling from the loss of her boyfriend, job, and self-respect, Sami Peters is shocked to find herself at the inaugural BDSM Boot Camp at Clifftop Fantasies. If that isn’t enough, she’s partnered with not one but two semipro football players, known as AJ and Crash.

AJ is pining over his ex, and the normally happy-go-lucky Crash is distressed by the amount of vegetables in the cooking at Clifftop. Sami finds herself taking classes with these two in rope bondage, needle play, and scene negotiation, among other alarming topics.

On top of everything else, Sami’s best friend Carly and most of the Grandpointe leather community are under attack by a moral crusader. Can Sami, AJ, and Crash save the community and themselves by exploring this new lifestyle together? Should she submit to the guys as they learn to be Doms, or are they just out slumming?

(I will give an excerpt worth waiting for at the end !)

Hennessee: Do you have any advice for new writers?

Cassidy: Write. It doesn’t matter if it’s good or bad; the only way you’re going to improve and develop the discipline you need to be a writer is to write. Just get it on paper (or into the computer). You can change it later. Just write.

Hennessee: Is there any of your strengths or weaknesses in your books you use to develop your characters?

Cassidy: We use Reggie’s smartass sense of humor as often as we can, and Cassidy’s insecurities to make the female characters relatable and give them room to grow.

Hennessee: Tell me, do you have any strange habits?

Cassidy: Most of our habits are strange. :) We do like going to the local BDSM club whenever we get a chance. And we spend most evenings doing chainmail while we watch television.

Hennessee: Sounds like fun! If your friends could describe you with one word, what would it be?

Cassidy: Kinky!

Hennessee: Woot! Well, I'll pose another question to you.  What do you say to people who believe romance books are porn for women?

Cassidy: What’s wrong with porn? :) Romance tends to appeal to women more than men because women are more interested (usually) in the emotions that go along with falling in love. There’s nothing wrong with that. Some people like reading about crime, some like reading about spies, some like reading about the feeling of falling in love. And some like porn. Who really cares?

Hennessee: I'm always interested to know how other authors deal with writer's block. How do you deal with it?

Cassidy: We walk the dog or go play disc golf. While we’re walking, we brainstorm ideas, lobbying them back and forth until something good emerges. So we always (pretty much) know where we’re going next—although it doesn’t always end up looking the way we’d planned it! The characters often like to add their own twists during the actual writing.

Hennessee: If you could date any character from your books, who would it be and why?

Cassidy: Crash. He’s so fun and playful. But then AJ is sweet and can be serious. Or Dante, in the next book. He’s very sweet, too, and active. Of course, Rune in the Omnific books is based very strongly on Reggie, so that’s a given. Karl and Decker (from the Siren books) are very commanding and knowledgeable about BDSM, so they’d be fun to play with… So I guess I’d have to say all of them!

Hennessee:  Here's a tough one. :) What is your favorite comfort food?

Cassidy:Cheese and/or chocolate. Reggie would probably say pizza. This weekend while we’re in Philadelphia we’re looking forward to going back to a wonderful Chinese restaurant (about 3 blocks from the convention center) where we had a fabulous honey coconut chicken dish last year. Of course we’ll have to get a Philly cheesesteak while we’re there too!

Hennessee: What are your hobbies?

Cassidy:We have a small family business making and selling handmade chainmail jewelry (www.polyspleasures.com). We travel around the country (heading to Philadelphia tomorrow!) doing fetish shows, street fairs and wholesale events. Feel free to watch our website and contact us if we’re going to be near you – we’re always happy to meet fans or fellow authors wherever we go. We also ride motorcycles and play disc golf.

Hennessee: If you could have dinner with anyone, who would it be and why?

Cassidy: I’d love to have dinner with George Eliot (MaryAnn Evans) and find out what it was like for her to be ostracized (for “living in sin” with a man) and put out novels as a male. Virginia Woolf is also someone I find really fascinating. Or maybe P.G. Wodehouse. I’ll bet he was a riot at the dinner table.

Hennessee: Not all of us started out as writers. Some of us had shitty jobs at some point in time. Tell me about yours.

Cassidy:  Hmm – The last job I had was the best one ever for about five years, and then the worst one ever for about six (after the boss found out I was polyamorous). Once I told her I was writing alternative romance, that was the beginning of the end. Fortunately I’ve had the freedom to write full-time since then. Losing that job was the best thing that ever happened to me.

Hennessee: Ouch. I'm very glad to hear you have found your utopia now! Since I'm always embarrassing myself, please share with me one of your most embarrassing moments.

Cassidy: At our first romance convention, RomCon Denver 2010, Reggie was only one of two guys at the convention. There was an evening “sexy” event, where Reggie was voluntold to act out a sex scene on stage that was being read by our friend DJ Westerfield. In the middle of the scene, his co-victim’s phone rang – it was her husband, calling to see what she was up to!

Hennessee: OMG! That's hysterical! Voluntold! That's great :)

Hennessee: Okay, back to business. Tell me something odd about you two I don't know yet.

Cassidy: There are lots of odd things about us. For me, I like to tell people when asked that question that I’ve never changed a diaper in my life. For Reggie, it would probably be that he’s a man who writes romance novels. For both of us, it’s that we practice a Master/slave lifestyle. We’re pretty odd all the way around!

Hennessee: Last, but not least. Please tell me how readers can learn more about you two.

Cassidy: Visit our website at www.naughtyeverafter.wordpress.com! Or write to us (kasialexander@gmail.com) if you have individual questions about BDSM or D/s. We’re always happy to discuss our lifestyle. You can also check out the Denver Westword (www.westword.com) tomorrow, Feb. 14. We’ll be one of the cover stories!

At last, here is the excerpt for Cassidy Brownings newest release, Double Dom Fantasies!

Excerpt:

“Would any of you like to try a few needles now to see how it feels?”
Before anyone could answer, Lucy squealed, “I would just love to see the big guy here take his shirt off and give it a try. That would be really hot!” She went to stand in front of Crash, reached past Sami, and ran a hand over his chest, smiling flirtatiously up at him.
Sami had no question that it was panic that flashed across Crash’s face as he stared down at the woman in front of him. AJ was also undoubtedly aware of how he was feeling, because he stepped forward and opened his mouth to say something.
Lucy cut him off, tapping Crash on the chest. “You’re not afraid of a little prick, are you, stud?”

She went off into gales of laughter, and Crash turned a helpless, mournful look on Sami and AJ, visibly gathering his macho pride. He gulped a little and cleared his throat before he spoke. “No, of course not.”
He took the few steps to the chair in the front as if it was a guillotine, pulling off his shirt as he went. Sami moved with him and took both of his hands as he settled himself in the chair, trying to keep his attention on her instead of Beth, who was taking supplies out of her case and laying them out on the small table.
When Beth seemed to be ready, she leaned over Crash, rubbing his shoulders gently. “Are you sure about this?”
“Just do it.” His voice was tense, and his shoulders were bunched up as if he was expecting to be beheaded. There seemed to be no blood at all in his face, making Sami worry that he might indeed pass out.
AJ came to stand next to her, and they exchanged worried looks as Beth cleaned off Crash’s skin with alcohol and prepared a needle. Suddenly Sami had a flash of inspiration. She knelt down in front of the chair and leaned in to kiss him on the lips.
His eyes flew wide open but then closed again as he began to respond. His lips were softer than she would have expected, and she shifted a little so that she could make it as good a kiss as possible. Their mouths opened slightly, adjusting to each other, and the tip of his tongue touched her lip softly. There was no doubt that she was responding to him, too. Almost as if Beth was still zapping them, sparks raced through her body in ways that she could only barely remember experiencing before, heating up her core and seeming to fuse them together. Crash seemed to feel it, too. He let go of her hands and reached up to pull her head in closer.
Sami had to fight to keep from losing track of what was going on. At any other time she would have allowed herself to get lost in the sensation of his lips on hers, his tongue entering and exploring her mouth, but now it was important to watch Beth to see when the first needle was in.
When she thought it was, Sami pulled away from the kiss. She was glad to see that all of the color that had drained out of Crash’s face had returned. His eyes opened again, taking a moment to focus, but then he locked gazes with her, not even noticing that Beth was putting another needle in the back of his right shoulder.
“How does that feel, Crash?” Beth asked, stepping around to see his face.
“Like the softest lips in the world.” Crash’s voice was low so that Beth had to lean forward to hear it.
She raised her eyebrows at Sami, who thought her face must have been bright red from the amount of heat in it.
“Okay,” Beth said slowly, touching Crash on the shoulder. She seemed to be trying not to laugh. “That’s good to know, but I meant the needles.”
“Needles?”
Beth chuckled and turned back to the group. “And so you can see, they really don’t hurt. He doesn’t even know they’re there.”
“I don’t think he’d be aware of a nuclear blast right now,” AJ commented.
“Wait, what? I have needles in me?” Crash seemed to be coming back to himself a little. He tried to turn his head to see over his shoulder, but the movement must have shifted the needles. His eyes went round and alarmed, and he stiffened.
“Maybe you’d better kiss him again so I can get them out,” Beth told Sami with a smile.
Sami met Crash’s eyes again. Her pussy was clenching at the thought of repeating the kiss, even though she tried to tell herself that it would be the last time, and only for his good, of course. There was nothing between them. She couldn’t let herself build something out of this that wasn’t there. Soon the guys would go back to their own lives and probably girlfriends, and she would go back to trying to put her life together again. But she leaned in and their lips met and all thought disappeared.
